Community Outreach, Education, and HIV Testing: The Mobile Health Team

The Mobile Health Team

The Mobile Health Team provides sexual health education and testing directly to adolescents and young adults at schools and community organizations.

Health educators and other health care providers travel to community sites to deliver interactive multi-media presentations about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV, and birth control, and then offer participants individual counseling and non-invasive screening tests for STIs, including HIV. Later, we give test results and conduct follow-up at the community site or at one of Project STAY's clinics.

We recognize the need for careful, considerate, and age-appropriate counseling before an STI or HIV test. During pre-test counseling, we conduct a thorough assessment to ensure that clients are emotionally and psychologically ready to handle being tested. Our team also believes in the importance of continuity. The counselor who performs the pre-test counseling session is the same trusted counselor who delivers the test result.

We continue to offer services to young people after they learn their test results. If a client's STI or HIV test is negative, our counselor may provide additional risk-reduction counseling or make referrals for mental health, primary care, or family planning services, as needed.

If a client tests positive for STIs or HIV, we are well-equipped to provide an immediate link to appropriate care and services. We strive to ensure that all clients seamlessly pass from counseling to testing to receiving whatever clinical services they need.

Project STAY recognizes the need for careful, considerate, and developmentally appropriate counseling to assist in preparation for an HIV test. During pre-test counseling, we conduct a thorough psychosocial assessment to ensure that clients are emotionally and psychologically ready for testing and have adequate support systems in place. Our clinical team also believes in the importance of continuity. The counselor who performs the pre-test counseling session(s) is the same trusted counselor who delivers the test results.

If a client's test is negative, our counselor may continue to see the client for additional risk-reduction counseling. She or he will also make referrals for mental health, primary care, or family planning services, as needed. If a client's test is positive, an immediate linkage is made to other members of the Project STAY clinical team to begin further evaluation. This one-stop approach offers a seamless transition from counseling and testing to clinical services.
